چکیده

Mean free path of inelastic electron scattering has been measured with a 200 keV transmission electron microscope for the majority of stable elemental solids and their oxides. An oscillating behavior vs atomic number Z has been revealed, such that within one row of the Periodic Table, the minimum maximum of is observed for elements with completed empty outer d shells. A significantly weaker Z dependence is observed for the oxides. The Z variation is ascribed to the three major factors: atomic density, number of “free” electrons per atom, and contribution of atomic core-loss transitions.

Fundamentals of electron energy-loss spectroscopy

Electron energy-loss spectroscopy (EELS) is an analytical technique that is based on inelastic scattering of fast electrons in a thin specimen. In a transmission electron microscope (TEM) it can provide structural and chemical information about a specimen, even down to atomic resolution. This review provides an overview of the physical basis and new developments and applications of EELS in scan...

Dynamics of Electron Beam Channeling in Single Atomic Column and in Crystals

Manifestation of channeling effects in quantitative interpretation of atomic-resolution measurements made using scanning transmission electron microscope (STEM) has been observed in imaging and spectroscopic data [1-3]. Here, channeling refers to the path of the electron beam along atomic columns in a crystal. A feature common among STEM probe path in crystals of many different elemental compos...

Elemental mapping in achromatic atomic-resolution energy-filtered transmission electron microscopy.

We present atomic-resolution energy-filtered transmission electron microscopy (EFTEM) images obtained with the chromatic-aberration-corrected FEI Titan PICO at the Ernst-Ruska Centre, Jülich, Germany. We find qualitative agreement between experiment and simulation for the background-subtracted EFTEM images of the Ti-L2,3 and O-K edges for a specimen of SrTiO3 oriented down the [110] zone axis. ...

Aberration-corrected scanning transmission electron microscopy of semiconductors

The scanning transmission electron microscope (STEM) has been able to image individual heavy atoms in a light matrix for some time. It is now able to do much more: it can resolve individual atoms as light as boron in monolayer materials; image atomic columns as light as hydrogen, identify the chemical type of individual isolated atoms from the intensity of their annular dark field (ADF) image a...
